Phillip Treacy and Lady Gaga. |
It would be impossible to write anything about modern hats without including a nod (or in this case an entire post) to Irish milliner Phillip Treacy. Rarely am I at a loss for words, but even I must admit, these hats speak for themselves. Behold........
SJP and Catherine Windsor are both huge supporters of Mr. Treacy's work. |
Remember that kinda great wedding in April? Well THIS hat figured rather prominently and was later auctioned off for quite a handsome sum. |
When asked in the Culch.ie interview if anyone could wear hats, PT replied:
"Hats are meant to be for everyone. It's a very potent part of the body to decorate because when you meet people for the first time, you are not meeting their foot or their hand or their hip, you are meeting their face. The purpose is to enhance the features of the face. It's also a cheaper alternative to cosmetic surgery."
In the studio with Phillip Treacy. |
I can't think of a better reason to wear a hat, can you?
No one is quite certain of the origin of the phrase mad as a hatter, but apparently mercury was frequently used in the process of hat making (to cure pelts). Many milliners suffered from mercury poisoning which caused brain damage. Could this be the source of the phrase?
If I had the means THIS would be my hat of choice. |
Just because it's worth seeing one more time. |
* Apparently Lewis Carroll never meant for there to be an answer to this riddle.
Have a beautiful day.
