Photographing the Dreams of an Age
I bumped into Julius Shulman when researching Mid-Century Modern Design, specifically his picture of the Stahl House or “Case Study House #22”, which is his most famous work. Apparently this photograph and others by him of California Mid-Century Modern Architecture, were responsible for popularizing the style around the world, the Stahl House in particular.
His photographs took architectural photography to a new level of art, and helped shape the careers of architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner, Charles Eames, and Richard Neutra, with whom he was friends.
I love that his beautiful work offers us a look into the modern landscape of the 50’s and 60’s. It allows us to step into the frame and breathe the air and experience the optimism and magic of that day. Apparently, many of the structures he captured no longer exist or have been so badly modified over the years that his work truly is a time capsule.
