ACCENT PIECES - THE ROOM DIVIDER

The Mid Century Modern Room Divider Rules!
Of all the accent pieces we'll be talking about this week, the room divider is the most essential for a truly MCM look.
Because we live in a small house, Braxton and I can't seem to figure out how to incorporate this iconic piece into our own decor.  We don't have a room large enough to be "divided", so....do we dare put a room divider against a wall or in front of a window?  I've seen it done, in photographs, but I'm still not so sure.  Perhaps a room divider just isn't in the cards for us....but that hasn't kept me from swooning over these.....enjoy!

I love that these pieces are bunchable, meaning the sides are flat allowing the pieces to be placed next to each other without any gap.

A pretty and delicate laser cut metal screen.

Classic MCM.  We've run into several of these and they rarely appear well made.  This one looks fun.

This piece is gorgeous!  Love the danish modern influence.

When styling a classic MCM piece, it's important to keep things sparse.  This is not the place for your Hummel collection or a thousand best sellers.  A piece of art glass + a small stack of books + and a piece of pottery or two = perfect!

Love the DM legs on this one...simple and elegant.

This one is clearly substantial enough to be placed against a wall, it fact, it's probably best.

The next three can be found on 1st dibs, for those of you with deep (really deep) pockets!

Does anyone remember when I posted about our "Biggs" sofa?  No?  It's here...http://braxtonandyancey.blogspot.com/2011/04/elephant-in-room-and-other-bits-and.html
Over the weekend B. and I were at an estate sale in our neighborhood and we ran into someone who recognized me as the "biggs lady" and said that he had purchased the sofa from the antiques dealer we had sold it to, and that it lived in his living room and he loved it!
So nice to know that Braxtons grandmothers sofa is being loved and well cared for.

Please join us this week for accent pieces muse...we'll talk about magazine racks, coffee tables and end tables, lamps and clocks!
Have a beautiful day.

HIGH POINT FURNITURE MARKET

JONATHAN ADLER AT HPFM!
Of course I have much love for jonathan adler...who doesn't?  Anyone who appreciates happy colorful design, who wants to absolutely love their home, who has a modern aesthetic, must love JA.  Check out his showroom at market.....I dare you not to smile!
I love that JA took something old and stuffy, yep, I'm talking needlepoint pillows, and made them cool!

Damn I'm in love with that wooden floor lamp.

When our girls were little they had a saying..."happy happy joy joy".    Perfect description of this chair.

Check out the MCM room divider against the wall.

Groovy stuff Jonathan, as always.  Love love love.
The following pictures are NOT brought to you by Jonathan Adler.
This was a wall hanging Braxton was enamoured with...he asked me to take this pic.  I wonder what he has in  mind for this?  Can't wait to find out.

I'm not really certain what it is about this chair...it's small, which I love, it's beige(ish) which I don't love, it's asymmetrical, again love...it's really kind of glamorous, don't ya think?

I wish you could have seen this pillow in person...I swear it glowed.  Glowed.

One more from the "antique market".  These blue chairs were perhaps the most vibrant thing I saw all week.  Heaven.
I didn't post yesterday... my bad.  Actually, it was good.  I spent the entire day at my upstairs desk, the one looking out of the window at the most magical pear tree in the world, and I drew.  All day.  I drew patterns for fabric ideas, inspirations from market, doodles.  I've found my thrill.  Drawing paper, colored pencils, colorful sharpies, tracing paper, a stack of c.d.'s, fresh coffee.  God I love my life!  I hope you love yours too!
Have a beautiful day.

MID CENTURY MODERN AT HIGH POINT FURNITURE MARKET

MID CENTURY FINDS AT H.P.F.M.
Remember our new bar cart?  This coffee table, with its heavy brass, reminds me of it.  I've been   kicking around ideas for brass/glass tables for a while and this one is a huge inspiration for me!

Braxton and I are back from five days spent at the worlds largest furniture market.  It was exciting, exhausting, overwhelming, fattening and fun.
I've been to HPFM for several years now, and I usually spend most of my time in the main building, which is where the best stuff is.  This year I ventured off and found, in another building, in the darkest corner, away from the crowds....the "antique market".
The antique market, as the name would suggest, is a showing of mostly local (east coast) antique dealers...some were more mom & pop, some were quite sophisticated collectors, and a few were dealing in Mid Century Modern.  Oh my!
I took some pics for you, which are not as clear as I would have liked due to the  darkness of the building.  I'll try to explain what you are seeing...
I couldn't get over the beauty of this grass green love seat against the orange walls!  Notice the danish modern magazine stand?....

Here it is again.  This I love.

Love the Mary Blair quality of the horse and rider.  Does this remind you of the illustrations in Sleeping Beauty?

B. and I have been looking for the perfect tension lamp.  This one isn't it, but still....

Love a good corner piece...not certain about the fancy metal work, but I do admire the doors and hardware.

This piece was incredible.  Difficult to tell in the photo, but this curves away from the wall.

I especially love the painting that leaning on the wall above this piece.

I thought the prices were rather steep for MCM, but that's to be expected at market.

This killed me!  Two kidney (or yin/yang) shaped brass/glass tables.  Can you see the one in the foreground?  Used together, or on either side of a sofa, these are so Hollywood glam!

Love this pair of chairs, the upholstery was in perfect condition.

FUN!

Clunky, and I really don't like the fabric, but I can think of a million ways to make this better.  Inspiration!

Love this bright green!
Eating in restaurants for four days definitely did a number on my metabolism and skin...all that sodium and fat.  I'm so ready to get back to healthy eating and my exercise routine.  Glad to be back, yall!
I'll be posting more pics (not MCM "antiques") later in the week.
Did anyone else go to market?  What inspired you the most?

Have a beautiful day.

Tim Burton Inspired Home Décor in 3 Style Stories – Gothic, Modern Gothic and Fantastical

While we are away at H.P.F.M. I thought I'd share a few blasts from the past.  Enjoy.  We'll catch up when we get back.
Rocking the Whimisical Gothic Muse in Decorating

When I was researching Tim Burton Muse week in home décor, I didn’t know what I would find in the Googlesphere. Didn’t really know what I wanted to find, but I knew it wasn’t Halloween, or Vampire or even too spooky – just atmospheric, a little playful, but with gothic pattern and old velvets and curtains, a somber color pallet, a little sweetness, a little romantic decrepitude, a little melancholy

Where I ended up from my research was 3 Burtonesque styles: Traditional Gothic, Gothic Modern, and Fantastical. Other ways include Alice (see our Alice Muse week) or Spooky Circus (as in Big Fish) inspired, but I couldn’t find much on the Circus-way. Maybe a muse for another day…

It’s been a fun week of Burton-ing. As we’ve said, we love his work and that he rocks the method designer with his clothes and his art in sync.

Hope you enjoy! Braxton

Let's start with a Traditional Gothic Story...
Very Corpse Bride

Love the ironwork and the B/W and red story, classical and modern elements here

Very dark

Love the silver legs...and the croc rocks!

Wow! Get the dustbuster, honey.
Left click to ZOOM this Fantastic image

Again, very Corpse Bride

CG art tells the story

Moving to Modern Burton and Modern Gothic Stories...

Very cool room

Great silver story here. Romantic

Great juxt of old/nw with B/W story and silver

Bold Burtonesque stipes, ghost chair and mirrored table rocks!

Very dramatic and theatrical

Silver and gray bold stiped wallpaper and dark floors look great.

Red and White bold stripes also work, especially with dark wood floor and furniture

A little too theatrical and bloody, but cool

Dig the full moon. Nice B/W and grey story

Love this

Love the poison green chaise in this B/W room - really makes a statement!

Now for a dose of the Fantastical Burton Story...

See some colorfull playfullness here

Fantastical Burtonesque trees

What I'm seeing here is the lamps and shadoweque whimsical hangings

From the Moma retrospective...

Tim Burton - Rock On! We love your work!
